How Do Bloggers Continue To
Publish During The Egyptian
Revolution In The Face Of
Government Suppression Efforts?
As I watch the events of the Egyptian revolution unfold, I wonder what the protesters are doing to sustain the free flow of information?
The national government has moved to close down the Internet which includes:
- Social networks like Facebook
- Micro-blogging sites like Twitter
- Social bookmarking sites
- All forums
- All blogs
- All RSS news aggregators
You can see from this list that the government faces a monumental task of information suppression.
It can't just shut down a few selected Web sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
It has to shut down the whole Internet!
But, with the Internet shut down the protesters are communicating by cell phone and text messages.
OK. So the governement shuts down all cell phones!
Oops! In modern, contemporary society a huge amount of commerce (and ordinary affairs) occurs over wireless mobile networks.
So this type of shutdown is highly counter-productive over the long run and can't be sustained long-term.
Also, another fundamental problem the government has is the television (and radio?) media alternatives to state run TV.
The Egyptian government has closed down Qatari satellite channels for Al Jazeera, because it did not like its coverage.

A collaboration between Google, Twitter and SayNow lets people without access to the Web share messages on Twitter via voice mail.
The service, which is live now, offers three international phone numbers to call -- +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855.
For each call, the service will instantly post a message to Twitter with a link to listen to the message.
It seems that Internet access is now being restored in Egypt, but all Egyptian bloggers must have contingencey alternatives planned.
Do not wait for the next wave of suppression to set up publishing alternatives and don't wait to alert your readers to those choices.
