I’m going to explain the basic concept with a few suggestions of how to apply it, but you will have to use your imagination to find alternatives that fit your individual situation.

Basically, you are going to use the technique of a competitive contest to gain .edu backlinks.

If you have a product (software, etc.) or service that you can give away or offer at a discount to students or instituitonal employees, you will do so to contest winners (10-50?? or so winners).

The members must write on their blogs why they deserve to win the prize (complete with anchor text hyperlink to your site/blog).

If you don’t have a product or service of your own, use the giveaway events to make up a unique incentive package of products that would attract that membership group.

Winners get access to the download link for the incentive package.

Simply go to ClickBank.com and find the top selling products for any keyword area of interest.

You can then proceed to build a sales funnell for a particular product with proven demand.

My suggestion is a refinement of this technique.

Most of the top search engines have by now published their yearly list of top searches for 2009.

For our purposes the most useful list is published by Ask.com and is titled Ask.com’s Top Questions of 2009

When you study this page you will see that there are multiple categories of “top questions”.

The fundamental process you want to follow is matching up products at ClickBank.com and Amazon.com with areas of high interest as indicated by the top questions lists.

You should provide some quality content that answers these questions (and closely related questions), and include your recommendation for the appropriate affiliate product.

Obviously, many of the products and questions answered will have nothing to do with Internet marketing, so you will have a diversified base of sales.

When you take this process to the next level and research long tail keywords once you have settled on a product, you will be in a unique position of marketing strength.

When you add in a little article marketing to drive traffic to your content sites, you will have a rock solid source of recurring income.

You can repeat this process hundreds or thousands of times!

The income potential is unlimited.

As has been discussed in previous posts, reciprocal links are still very powerful in terms of increasing link popularity and producing targeted traffic.

I recently read an excellent post, 10 Tips for Requesting Link Exchanges, on the blog, Traffikd.

Internet Marketing Strategy:Blog Reciprocal Links

I particualrly liked tip #6, Don’t Ignore Single-Post Links.

Most link exchanges are mutual blogroll listings so you might be inclined to overlook this strategy.

And last but not least be sure to find out the blogger’s name (tip#5).

Personalizing your request will definitely yield a higher positive response.

One strategy that I haven’t seen discussed anywhere is when you make a blog comment that contains a link to a resource on your blog, ask for a blogroll or sidebar link to the resource in your comment (if they find sufficient value in the resource!).

You’d be surprised at how effective this specific request can be if you have developed a valuable onsite resource.
